A fata morgana or superior mirage is a mirage that appears on the horizon and is typically associated with ships at sea or distant mountains. the mirage may be composed of one or several inverted or erect images of objects on the horizon. This may make mountains or ships on the horizon look taller, stacked, or sometimes upside down much higher over the horizon than they actually are.
